Wolff Movie Index

Wag the Dog(1997)

Wolff rating: EXCELLENT

Plot summary: Hollywood producer signs on to help with a public relations crisis a few days before the election.

Biased, pithy comments: Cynical, clever, and extremely funny, although you rapidly believe you're laughing more at yourself than at anything that's happening on screen. With stark pictures and dialogue that sounds unrehearsed but is devastatingly crafted, this movie makes you distrust the media wholly and completely, although people can walk out of the theatre and realize that at some level, it's a little too implausible. But the problem with conspiracy theories is that they can't ever be proven entirely wrong---whoever espouses the truth is really just a flunky for Them, whoever They are. Kudos to both Hoffman and De Niro (and, surprisingly, Willie Nelson).

Other Notes: Numerous Golden Globes.

How many times I have seen it: x2

Starring: Dustin Hoffman, Robert De Niro, Anne Heche.
Directed by: Barry Levinson
