Wedding Singer, The(1998)

Wolff rating: FAIR

Plot summary: In the heart of 1980, a wedding singer finds himself attracted to his best friend, who is in danger of marrying a putz.

Biased, pithy comments: This is a movie with some very funny moments in it that aren't supported by the rest of the film. The parts that work are the 80s atmosphere (good musical selection, throwaway lines about junk bonds, Rubik's cubes, and so forth) and everything about Drew Barrymore. However, Sandler never really cut loose like I expected him to, and he couldn't seem to really *act* his ``nice guy'' role. The script (which mostly had very broad humor) was filled with strange lines that just trail off---characters admit awkward things or say what they really think in harsh terms, then when asked to clarify themselves just say, ``I don't know what I mean.'' I feel like the scriptwriters are saying this to the audience, and the show is so full of these slow moments that you have time to realize how contrived the plot is. So, I'm beginning to like Sandler better than when he was doing his horrendously painful stand-up, but I don't think this is the right role for him---the nice guy. And hey, Hollywood! Can you come up with a better romantic-comedy plot?

Other Notes: Steve Buscemi has the best lines in the film at the beginning. Good star cameo in funny airplane scene at the end. You've seen the evil Glenn (Matt Glave) as evil Dr. Dale in ``ER.''

How many times I have seen it: x1

Starring: Adam Sandler, Drew Barrymore, Christine Taylor, Allen Covert, Angela Featherstone, Matthew Glave.
Directed by: Frank Coraci
