White Squall(1995)

Wolff rating: FAIR

Plot summary: Young boys sail around the world with a gruff-but-endearing captain.

Biased, pithy comments: Ridley Scott proposes a movie, and the studio says, ``Yes, yes, make us the next Alien! Make us another Blade Runner! Have all the money you need!" And sure enough, Scott pulls out another exquisitely-shot epic about men and the implacable sea. The problem is similar to the problem with his ``1492'', which is that the characters just don't appeal to you. Bridges seems actually rather wooden, and I had trouble telling apart the boys he was acting as a father figure to until near the end. My own suggestion is to watch ``Dead Poets Society'' again and get the feeling that Scott was trying to reach.

How many times I have seen it: x1

Starring: Jeff Bridges
Directed by: Ridley Scott
