Winning(1967(?))

Wolff rating: GOOD

Plot summary: Racer has trouble getting his head and new family together to go after the Indy 500.

Biased, pithy comments: Newman is at his crinkling best here, and handles both the acting and cars very well. The supporting cast is also quite good, and makes the show into a ``Days of Thunder'' that has a less-glossy tone to it, though perhaps the filming of the racing scenes of ``Thunder'' was a little snappier. And hey, the soundtrack on this thing fits racing as well as a square peg fits a round hole.

Other Notes: The display of cheesiness in the opening ceremonies of the Indy 500 is not lost on the director, who shoots it in all its hick glory.

How many times I have seen it: x1

Starring: Paul Newman, Joanne Woodward
