INDIE is a software tool that builds educational environments. What kinds of educational environments would these be? In this chapter, we discuss Volcano Investigator, a real prototype built by master's students at the Institute for the Learning Sciences (ILS), taking more and more abstract views of it until we have distilled its structure. We will then take that structure we see in Volcano Investigator and transfer it to other INDIE GBSes.
