Immunology Consultant

Immunology Consultant was built to teach 2nd-year medical students as a supplement to the standard curriculum in immunology at the Northwestern University Medical School (NUMS). In it, students learn the intricacies of immune responses by diagnosing a sick girl, Ruby. The students are placed in the role of an expert immunologist who needs to give a clear explanation to a general practitioner about Ruby's illness.

After students hear the explanation of the case, they can interview Ruby, run lab tests on her, or talk to immune system experts through an ASK system (which contains their actual professors in their immunology course at NUMS). The 14 lab tests are the primary source of information about what's wrong with Ruby (an implied lesson of the system--Ruby herself is the source of only one important clue).

The four claims students can make about Ruby's condition are somewhat
abstract--Ruby can either be having a normal immune response to a viral or bacterial infection, or one of two kinds of abnormal immune responses. Students can confirm or disconfirm each claim.

If and when students make a correct diagnosis with sufficient evidence to prove to the GP what Ruby's problem is (she is in fact having heart problems related to a previously undiagnosed case of strep--her immune system has mistaken her heart for the bacteria), the doctor gives a quick run-down of the situation, and the GP expresses her gratitude.5.2 Immunology Consultant was a demonstration system that was built twice--once in INDIE 1.0 and once in INDIE 2.0--but never deployed.
